The Challenge
Large windows at the ends of both buildings meant there wasn't enough continuous wood wall to build code-compliant shear walls using wood framing alone. At the same time, the client wanted large open interior spaces throughout the venue, which meant conventional ceiling joists — normally used to resist outward roof thrust — weren't an option.
JRH’s Approach
JRH designed the roof structure using trusses instead of ceiling joists, reducing the horizontal load the roof transferred into the walls and preserving the open ceiling the client wanted. To resolve the shear wall problem at the window-heavy building ends, JRH added structural steel columns within the walls and structural steel at the ends of the buildings, giving the structure the lateral support that wood framing alone couldn't provide at those locations.
