Florida’s Stormwater Rules Have Changed
FDEP or one of Florida’s five water management districts issues Environmental Resource Permits for most stormwater systems.
Updated rules ratified by CS/SB 7040 (Chapter 2024-275) apply to applications deemed complete after December 28, 2025, including nutrient treatment requirements.
Many sites now need more treatment than older designs provided, which makes efficient stormwater design more valuable.
Low Impact Development
Low Impact Development (LID) keeps runoff closer to natural patterns:
Bioswales and rain gardens: filter and infiltrate runoff in landscaped areas
Permeable pavement: lets water soak in where soils and groundwater allow
Exfiltration and infiltration systems: store and release water underground
